Human Rights–Israel Report Surge in Palestinian Prisoner Deaths
Human Rights Group B'Tselem and Physicians for Human Rights has revealed that a sharp rise in deaths have been noticed in Palestinian prisoners in Israeli detention. As of early 2026, it is now documented that a minimum of 84 to 94 Palestinians have died in these detention centers since October 2023, with most suffering from overt symptoms of systemic torture, brutal physical abuse, and extreme medical neglect. In addition to these fatalities, the Israeli Knesset is rushing through a highly contentious Death Penalty Bill, which passed its first reading in January 2026. This bill exclusively applies to Palestinians, as it sets up a two-tiered system whereby military courts are authorized to impose death sentences with a simple majority vote, while deliberately excluding Israeli citizens from receiving such punishment. In spite of severe international outcry and a petition signed by more than 1,200 leading Israeli citizens, who have branded the bill a "moral stain," the Israeli Prison Service has allegedly begun making necessary logistical arrangements, including erecting execution chambers, to implement these sentences by hanging within 90 days of a judicial verdict.
